The Anthropocene Vignettes, a vocal quartet
The 2020 pandemic highlighted many attributes of the human race, some of them being Greed, Ego, Rage, and Oblivion. Jessi Harvey's quartet encourages us to watch, wait, and listen to what our planet needs from us. Perhaps, on the other side of all this, we will take better care of ourselves, our precious Earth, and each other.
The Oval Portrait by Felix Jarrar
“The Oval Portrait,” depicts a man arriving at an old mansion seeking shelter. Once he settled into one of the rooms, an oval portrait of a young woman catches his eye. At first he is enamored with how life-like it is and then he becomes quickly appalled. Next to his bed, he finds a small book containing the history of this particular portrait. The entry in this book is where our opera begins. The woman in the portrait is the bride of a painter. She is perfect to him, except in the fact that she is completely jealous of the attention the painter gives to his art rather than her. The artist asks to paint a portrait of her and she agrees. As she sits, the artist is completely taken over his painting. This grave obsession drives him into a delirium of which he cannot return, resulting in a very dark consequence. The virtual premiere of this micro opera was February 21, 2021.
